1963 Lotus Elan 1600 S1
- 10,156 miles on the odometer
- Original wheels and wheel caps
- Maintains high original condition
- Comprehensive maintenance records available
The Lotus Elan was officially unveiled at the British Motor Show in October 1962.
The Elan embodies the “simply, then add lightness” philosophy of Lotus founder Colin Chapman. The model featured a backbone frame with an FRP body, making it an ultra-lightweight sports car weighing around 680 kg, and it became popular for its performance.
Not only was it lightweight, but it also featured four-wheel disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and independent suspension, offering superb handling. Its balanced performance was so impressive that Gordon Murray called it "perfect".
Following the production of just 22 units of the Elan 1500, the Elan 1600 was introduced, featuring a 1,558 cc twin-cam 4-cylinder engine that produced 105 hp. Around 900 units were produced by 1964, and this model became known as the Series 1.
This specific car is a Series 1 model built in 1963.
It features the Elan 1600 emblem on the side and trunk hood, 4 round rear taillights, and manually operated side screens, maintaining the Series 1 characteristics.
The wooden panels, steering wheel, and shift knob are all original.
The FRP body, which is prone to issues, retains its original paint. The seats and other parts also remain in original condition, and it is equipped with the original wheels and wheel caps, which are hard to find today.
Looking at the gauges, the speedometer is in miles, and the odometer shows 10,156 miles.
The exhaust is a stainless steel recreation of the original, and aside from the replacement of the dynamo with an alternator, the car remains in original condition.
It also has a detailed maintenance record, including an engine overhaul in 2007.
This car allows you to experience the fully realized first-generation Series 1, and it maintains a highly original condition, making it a truly rare find.
