In 1976, BMW unveiled its new flagship coupe, codenamed E24, at the Geneva Motor Show. The first-generation 6 Series quickly earned its reputation as “the most beautiful coupe in the world.”
Building on this elegant platform, Alpina, a BMW-approved tuner renowned for its prowess on the racetrack, introduced the B9 3.5 Coupe in 1982, equipped with its first large-displacement naturally aspirated engine.
Under the hood was BMW’s pride and joy, the Silky Six, the M30 inline-six engine. Alpina enhanced it with MAHLE pistons, upgraded camshafts, a reworked cylinder head, and a reprogrammed Motronic system. The result was a high-performance unit outputting 245 hp and 320 Nm of torque. To match the enhanced performance, Alpina upgraded the suspension and wheels, giving this grand tourer the firm, focused driving dynamics the brand is known for.
In 1983, ALPINA introduced the B9 3.5/1, featuring a newly adopted 3,430 cc engine block and various refinements throughout the car.
This particular vehicle was first registered in Japan in February 1985 and was imported by Nicole, the official Alpina dealer. The engine displacement listed on the registration confirms it as one of the 77 B9 3.5/1 Coupe units produced before the end of production in 1985. The serial number on the center console plaque reads “B9-507”.
What makes this car even more exceptional is its Satin Blue exterior, a color not found on any other officially imported B9 3.5 Coupe in Japan. The body has been fully repainted, with moldings and rubber components replaced, allowing it to retain a near-new appearance. Classic Alpina gold striping boldly accents the car, while front and rear Alpina spoilers complete the look. The original 16-inch Alpina aluminium wheels are in pristine condition, free from blemishes.
Inside, the car maintains its ALPINA identity with a factory steering wheel, gauges, and other trim components. The Recaro-based front seats have been reupholstered using the correct original ALPINA fabric, resulting in an interior that’s as immaculate and correct as the exterior.
In addition to its visual restoration, the car’s mechanicals were carefully inspected and refreshed to preserve its performance in 2020. In 2022, the factory ZF 4-speed automatic transmission was replaced with a Getrag 5-speed manual (type 265), a conversion to enhance both drivability and collectibility.
This is a rare opportunity to own one of the finest surviving examples of Alpina’s iconic B9 3.5/1 Coupe, presented in a unique factory color and meticulously maintained to the highest standards.
