“DOHC 145 hp. Solex twin carburetors. Porsche-type 5-speed transmission. Rear suspension with stabilizer. High-speed radial tires. This is a car with a mission to drive: the GSS.”
This evocative tagline perfectly captures the sports car spirit of the era - and for good reason. The Mark II 2000 GSS was born to rival the era’s highly sought-after Skyline GT, combining performance and style in one compelling package.
The GSS (Grand Super Sports) variant of the second-generation Mark II was powered by the 18R-G engine, an evolution of the original 8R-G unit with a 2.5 mm increase in bore to 1,968 cc. While its underlying mechanics closely mirror the 8R-G, the 18R-G is a Yamaha-engineered twin-cam development, following the lineage of the Toyota 2000GT’s 3M and the 1600GT’s 9R units. Updated to meet emissions standards, it became a central engine alongside the 2T-G for Toyota during this period. The Mark II 2000 GSS was capable of a top speed of around 195 km/h - a remarkable performance for a Japanese car of its time.
Production of the GSS ceased in October 1975 with the implementation of the 50-year TTC-C emissions regulations, marking the end of the twin-carb high-output era before electronic engine management became widespread.
This particular example embodies the allure of the classic: a 2-door hardtop, naturally aspirated high-output engine, and timeless design. In 2024, it underwent a major restoration covering the engine, suspension, electrical systems, and bodywork, totaling approximately ¥5,000,000, with full documentation of all work performed.
The original seats remain in excellent condition, reflecting careful use even before restoration. A rare, high-performance classic preserved and refreshed for the modern collector.
