1967 MERCEDES-BENZ 250SL
- One of only 5,146 “250SL”s produced
- A rare example in excellent condition
The “SL” of a Mercedes stands for “Sport Leicht” which means in German, a light-weight sportscar. That was true until the second generation W113 but after that from the third generation R107 on, setting its sights at the US luxury market, they changed direction, and from “Sport Leicht” it became more “Super Luxury”.
This example is the successor to the legendary 300SL and 190SL, the second generation W113, in mid-season, for only a year, the 250SL was produced. The W113 made its debut at the Geneva Show in 1963. The French, Paul Bracq, who was the designer for Daimler Benz drew up the elegant body style, especially what is called the “pagoda top”, with the center being a little bit lower compared to the edges, the hardtop design is still talked about as the lovable characteristic of the W113.
Compared to the 300SL, in which everything was super, it is very mild and GT-ish, but among Mercedes it is the most sporty, and did well on the racetrack quite often.
In 1967, equipped with the 2.5-liter inline 6 valve SOHC engine and the rear wheels equipped with a disc break and an increased displacement of 2.8 liter, it evolved into a 250SL. They continued to be produced until 1971.
Among the series, the 250SL was produced the fewest ( only 5196) thus its value has been reevaluated. Also, until Type 250, many fans especially when seated in the rear seats considered the headrest-less look more simplified and favorable.
This example was obtained by a passionate collector fully restored, and maintained in a perfect condition for a long time. Each parts are in surprisingly beautiful condition, so much so that it could only be described as “brand-new.” If your goal is to find an elegant sports Mercedes, this is exactly the one.
