Vivio was released in various variations during its 6-year model cycle, and this particular model is the “T-top” model, probably the most special of all versions.
Only 3,000 were made to commemorate Subaru’s 40th anniversary. The most distinctive feature of the T-top was the three-part roof and electric rear window that could create five different styles: coupe, rear-only open, open roof (one or both sides), and fully open. This model has been repainted in Subaru’s well-known blue (genuine Subaru blue).
The exterior features aftermarket wheels and an aero body kit inspired by the GC8 Impreza, giving it a more sporty look. The odometer reads 93,181km, and there are no major problems. With regular maintenance, the car can run well for many years to come.
The Subaru Vivio was developed with a thorough emphasis on “high quality,” which was rarely seen on the kei cars during the time, and it has become somewhat of a legendary car.
The catchphrase at the time was “Simple & Rich”. It was positioned as a light car that was simple yet high quality, it adopted a 4-wheel independent strut/coil suspension system for both front and rear. The engine, except for the commercial version, is a straight-4 with electronically-controlled multipoint fuel injection. The chassis was newly developed to achieve a low centre of gravity, and the car’s maneuverability and safety were outstanding for the kei car standards of the time.
The Vivio, with its performance far beyond that of a light car, has a brilliant racing record, being the only kei car to win a class championship in the WRC with the “RX-R” equipped with a supercharged high-performance engine.
The Subaru Vivio, despite its rather cute appearance, became a serious sports car that showed Subaru’s abilities and ambitions.
