Mitsubishi first started assembling these vehicles by importing the US-manufactured parts and assembling them in Japan, a method called ‘knock-down’ production. From the ‘J3’ version onwards, Mitsubishi had an official license from Willys to assemble the cars.
This example was stored indoors for 4 years without its engine being started and its age is showing. Therefore, a full engine and fuel system overhaul would be required to start the engine. The engine is the more powerful JH4 engine known as the ‘Hurricane’ which marked Mitsubishi’s start to successful domestic engine development. This example was an early domestic model which were still left-hand drive only, this makes it a particularly rare version of the Mitsubishi Willys Jeep.
