1973 Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R [KPGC110]
- One of just 197 produced
- Features the long-legged “R” script unique to early models
- Fitted with period-correct seats and steering wheel
- Engine and mechanical components modified by Shiraishi Engineering
Introduced in 1972 as the successor to the Hakosuka, the fourth-generation Skyline, affectionately known as the “Kenmeri”, remained in production until 1977 and became a major commercial success with more than 700,000 units sold. Yet the GT-R variant stands apart: produced for only three months, it totaled just 197 units, making it one of the rarest and most coveted models in the Skyline lineage.
Among Kenmeri GT-Rs, several exceptionally rare examples, such as the few finished in red, have appeared at auction in recent years. The car offered here represents the more traditional and highly sought-after early model finished in silver.
Like the Hakosuka GT-R also featured in this auction, this example has benefitted from the craftsmanship of Shiraishi Engineering. It wears the signature red engine head cover, rides on Panasport wheels, and has been upgraded with Weber carburetors. While several components have been changed from factory specification, its authenticity remains evident in details such as the period-correct bezel back and the original elephant-marked oil cap. The exterior badging features the long, sweeping “R” script, known as the 足長美人 (long-legged beauty), a hallmark of early cars cherished by purists.
A closer look reveals further evidence of originality: the under-mounted bonnet support rod catch, a detail often lost during restoration, remains intact. This strongly suggests that the exterior retains its original paint. Inside, the period-correct steering wheel and seats are preserved, maintaining a high level of authenticity.
Mechanically enhanced by a renowned specialist yet visually faithful to factory form, this Kenmeri GT-R strikes a superb balance. It is a rare opportunity to acquire a highly original example of one of Japan’s most legendary performance icons.
