BH AUCTION 1.10 at City Circuit Tokyo Bay

1971 Mercedes Benz 280SL

  • Rare Factory-Delivered Manual Transmission
  • Fully Restored Inside and Out
  • Presented in Exceptional, Mint Condition

Debuting at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the W113—universally known as the “Pagoda”—carried the spirit of the legendary 300SL while becoming the most popular and best-selling model in the vertical-headlamp SL lineage. With features such as Mercedes-Benz’s in-house 4-speed automatic transmission and power steering, it set the template for what the SL name would come to represent: a car that was both a sports car and a luxury grand tourer.
In 1968, the model received a significant update with the introduction of the 280SL, powered by the 2.8-liter engine. By the end of its production in 1971, more than 50,000 units had been sold—a remarkable achievement.

Manual-transmission W113s are already scarce, but 280SLs equipped with a factory manual are rarer still.
The “0” in the eighth digit of the chassis number confirms that this example was delivered new with the optional manual gearbox, making it an especially desirable and collectible specification.

Offered from a discerning collector with a wide-ranging portfolio of notable automobiles, this 280SL is the result of careful stewardship and attention to detail.
The restored body shows beautifully, with exceptional paint quality, while the chrome trim retains a bright, mirror-like finish. The soft top has recently been replaced in a rich, deep wine red. Inside, the red leather interior remains in superb condition, with no noticeable wear to the seats. The wood trim on the dashboard shows no cracking or discoloration.

Professionally maintained and recently serviced—including inspection and roadworthiness—the car performs exactly as a W113 should: it drives, turns, and stops with confidence, offering a comfortable and enjoyable motoring experience.
A beautifully finished and highly rare manual-transmission 280SL, ready to be appreciated on the road or proudly displayed in any serious collection.
